Portrait Miniature of a Woman, Child, and Servant. Inscribed in ink over pencil on the backing paper "Drawn by D.J. Watkins 1838," and in ink on the wood backing panel "Painted by D.J. Watkins 1842." Watercolor on ivory, heightened with gum arabic, depicting a black woman wearing a red dress and white kerchief, standing, and handing a baby to a ginger-haired woman wearing a black off-the-shoulder dress with a white lace neckline, her hair in a braid coiled on the top of her head, the blond-haired baby wearing a blue dress trimmed in white lace, 3 3/8 x 2 5/8 in., mounted in a period mahogany frame with gilt brass liner. Condition: Small pigment losses, minor edge crack l.r.
