Text in part: ". . . Man and boy, my connection with your craft has now lasted quite half a century . . . the accidents of life has caused it to become a serious occupation . . . my pen is always getting me into scrapes for telling the truth...but (Washington) Irving and Paulding may have known more devil than have fallen into my share . . . 'The Devil - a link between the author and the printer: may he come with queries ingeniously few, and return with every one corrected'."
