N.B. Alexander Pope completed wood carvings of game birds such as this from about 1879 until 1883. As a child, Pope worked alongside his father at a lumber yard where he first began to make wood carvings of animals. He had a strong interest in hunting and fishing and continually portrayed animals (both dead and alive) and sporting iconography throughout his career. Beginning in the 1880s he stopped producing carvings in favor of trompe l'oeil oil paintings. Born in Dorchester, Pope was a Boston-based painter and an active member of the Boston Art Club.
