Engraved Scrimshawed Shell, 1859, the shell commemorating the maiden voyage of The Great Eastern on its maiden voyage from Southhampton to New York, engraved with the image of The Great Eastern and inscribed below: "The Great Eastern Steam Ship Designed by J.K. Brunel Esq./ Built J. I. Russel Esq./Launched on the 31st. Jan. 1858," signed "Wood" l.r. below water, with engraved statistics, the reverse engraved "on board July 30th 1859/ to my Wife from Dr. F(rederick) Hinkle (of New York)," dia. 6 3/8 in.

Note: The Great Eastern was used in 1865 to lay the transAtlantic cable.
