Collection of Printed and Handmade Paper Rewards of Merit, America, 19th century, the examples offered are painted, hand-lettered, letterpress printed, engraved, and lithographed, 101 total, the majority arranged loose in an album, fourteen are assembled in a frame, a page of six uncut merits are in a print sleeve, one is in a giltwood frame with hand-painted watercolor foliate vine border. Included with the merits is an article clipped from The New York Times, by Frances Phipps, dated October 10, 1984, entitled For Good Pupils, Special Awards, which discusses the history, collecting of and collections of these rewards of merit.
