Near Pair of S. Kirk & Son Co. Silver Spanish-American War Commemorative Plates, early 20th century, the rim finely stamped with overlapping flat leaves accented with berries, monogrammed to center, each stamped to reverse with inscription, "Made of Spanish Silver taken from The Cristobal Colon sunk in the Battle of Santiago de Cuba, July 3rd 1898," dia. 8 5/8 in., approx. 32 troy oz.
Note: The Spanish armored cruiser Cristobal Colon, cornered by the American fleet in the battle of Santiago de Cuba, was scuttled by her Captain rather than have her surrendered to the enemy. Her contents were quickly salvaged by the Americans, before the ship sank that evening.
