Silver Sugar Tongs, Thomas Richards, maker, New York, 1815-29, U-shaped form with tapered arms and oval spoon grips, marked "T. RICHARDS" in a cut-corner rectangle and "P" in a cut-corner square probably for the maker Pitkin, lg. 7 in., approx. 1 1/2 troy oz.
Provenance: The tongs were purchased by Thomas Gardner, (b. December 16, 1773), son of Thomas and Jane (Arthur) Gardner, of New York, and the husband of Elinor Bogart. Accompanying the tongs is an original bill of sale, which lists among other services, a tea service and sugar tongs, possibly the same tongs offered here, which were purchased from Thomas Richards of New York on May 12, 1820.
