American School, 19th Century

Portrait of Mary McMillan-Gunn. Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 34 1/4 x 27 in., in a later ogee mahogany frame. Condition: Scattered spotty retouch to background, dress, small punctures c.r. and u.r.

Provenance: By family descent, then to the consignor who purchased it from a member of the Gunn family in 1966.

Note: According to information recorded on the reverse of the frame, Mary McMillan became the wife of John G. Gunn who came to Brooklyn, New York, c. 1840 from Brechin, Scotland. They moved to Nyack, New York, c. 1860. A letter included with the painting is addressed to John G. Gunn from John Broach from Williamsburg and dated May 21, 1850. It reads "You are requested to attend a special meeting of the board of Finance, at the Trustee's Hall, on Friday Evening May 24th 6 1/2 o'clock. By order of the President."
