Needlework Sampler, "Maria Becker Age 14 1804," possibly New Jersey, silk threads on a linen ground with seven rows of alphabets above signature stitches,a motto "A good name is rather to be chosen than great riches," two houses, several animals and flowers, enclosed in a zig-zag border, (two stitched repairs in alphabet),13 1/2 x 12 1/4 in., in a black painted wooden frame.

Note: A label affixed to the reverse inscribed "Purchased at Foxlee estate sale Montvale, N. J."

overall light toning, upper right corner with brownish oxidation about 1 in. dia.; two repairs to the ground fabric stitched with white thread in the lower left alphabet rows about 1/2 and 1/3 in. in size.
