Description:

Artist-Designed 23kt Gold Pendant, Max Ernst, with deeply incised abstract design, dia. 4 1/2 in., no. 4 of 6, piece no. 1768-1744, Marseilles guarantee stamps and maker's mark for Francois Hugo, Aix en Provence, dated 1975, signed, original numbered wood velvet-lined box.

Note: Max Ernst (1891-1976) was a founding member of the Dada and Surrealist movements in Cologne and Paris. He worked in a wide range of styles and media. This work resembles his technique of "grattage", which involved the scraping or troweling of pigment from canvas. A retrospective recognizing Ernst as "one of the most significant artists of the 20th century" is currently on view at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York. For another work by the artist, see lot 367.
