Red, White, and Blue Painted Pine Folk Art Hanging Corner Cupboard, America, late 19th/early 20th century, the cupboard with arched crest applied with a carved eagle figure flanked by stars within circles, over a hinged door with two interior shelves over two lower shelves, the exterior embellished with applied and painted carved pine motifs including stars, crescent moons, hearts, clovers, diamonds, doves, and a horseshoe, painted in muted shades of red, white, and blue, the name "Jake Patterson" is inscribed in pencil on the reverse, ht. 30 3/4, wd. 16, dp. 10 in.

Provenance: Oral history relates that the cupboard was made by a man named Jake Patterson. He gave the cupboard to Ralph and Bessie Nichols of Russell, Kentucky in exchange for room and board in 1936. Shortly after the exchange, Patterson was sent to prison for murder and later died there. The couple's son, C.R. "Porky" Nichols, was three years old at the time of the exchange. The shelf was purchased from Nichols by the consignor. Included with the shelf is a photocopy of a letter signed by the daughter of C.R. Nichols relating the history her father told her of the folk art shelf.
