N.B. In a booklet published by the Ogunquit Museum of American Art, Curator Michael Culver notes, "Woodbury made his first visit to Ogunquit in 1888, while visiting Marcia Oakes and her family at their summer home in York Beach…Woodbury [had] always loved the sea, and was exhilarated by the dramatic rocky coast of Ogunquit. In 1898, he built a summer house and studio on the rocks overlooking Perkins Cove."
Quite taken with the Ogunquit locals, Woodbury completed many canvases through his career of beach and pier views, like the one presented here.
