Two Needlework Samplers, America, third quarter 19th century, one with wool yarns on a linen ground with alphabet panels above a strawberry vine border and lettering reading "Anne Maria Bett's work in her 9th year A.D.," over potted flowers and cornucopia motifs; the other with green and red wool threads on a punched paper ground with alphabet panels over lettering "Miss Helen Hutchins age 8 years Lebanon N.H. P.F. Hough Teacher Fall Term 1856," flanked by two birds on a nest, (toning on the first, stitch losses on the second), 12 x 10, 7 1/2 x 10 3/4 in.
