Appliqued Cotton Mariner's Compass Signature Quilt, Philadelphia and Springfield, New Jersey area, c. 1842, composed of thirty-two blocks set on the diagonal appliqued with red, blue, and brown printed cotton calico mariner's compass motifs, on a white ground, with blue printed eight-point stars appliqued in the white sashing corners, each block signed at the center in ink with the name of a member of the Warren, Hartshorne, Croshaw family and others, some dated 1842 and 1843, white cotton binding and backing, outline stitching to motifs with cable stitching in the sashing, (toning, stains, losses),101 x 101 in.
