Shaker Cherry and Tiger Maple Stand, probably by Abner Allen, Enfield, Connecticut, or Hancock, Massachusetts, with inscription on the drawer side "April 12 1818," the top which is supported by parallel chamfered supports, overhangs the case of two small drawers above one of case width, flanked by square slightly tapering legs, original red surface, the drawer with brass pulls, (very minor surface imperfections),ht. 26 1/2, top wd. 25 3/4, top dp. 24 1/8, case wd. 17 5/8, case dp. 17 5/8 in.

Note: Abner Allen (1776-1855) was a Shaker cabinetmaker who worked in both the Hancock, Massachusetts, and Enfield, Connecticut, communities. Some signed furniture with tapered drawer sides exist that have been identified with Abner Allen's work. Other Abner Allen construction techniques found in this stand include a heavily chamfered back edge of the drawer and the distinctive extended and chamfered top supports. Abner Allen died at the Enfield, Connecticut, community in 1855.
