N.B. As an American Impressionist, Joseph H. Greenwood painted the natural landscape and simplistic subjects such as the changing seasons, cow pastures, and the seaside. Greenwood was self-taught and painted almost exclusively in the Worcester, Massachusetts area. He used paint sparingly and often painted on cigar box lids. He frequently re-used materials like stretchers and frames, and even built his own frames. Greenwood disliked artist colonies, saying "I never went to but one school and that was nature's…I have kept away from schools and isms." He further elaborated, "Men who follow a school are always behind. If you have anything to say, say it in your own way."

Greenwood's work was recently recognized at the Worcester Art Museum in an exhibition Joseph H. Greenwood, An American Impressionist, March 6-August 8, 2004, curated by Nicole M. Nicas. We are grateful to Ms. Nicas for writing the above note and assisting in the cataloging of the Greenwood works in this sale.
