Black Bent Steel Garden Chair, patented by Lalance & Grosjean, New York, 1866, the curving strips of sheet steel and rods form the back and arms of this chair which has a brass button in the center of the seat imprinted "Lalance and Grosjean 273 Pearl St. N.Y.", painted black, ht. 35, seat ht. 17, dp. 27 in.

Literature: Innovative Furniture in America from 1800 to the Present by David Hanks, New York 1981, p. 60, fig. 60, includes a very similar chair which it describes as "patented in the U.S. by Frances A. Carre' of Paris, France who claimed to have invented it... the patent for this chair must have been purchased by Lalance and Grosjean (working 1852-post 1900)."
