Pen and Ink Reward of Merit, America, early 19th century, pen and ink on cardboard with a sketch of a fanciful bird below an inscription "This may certify that Master James Hale is a fine scholar and learns well," signed "Louisa Wells," an inscription affixed to the frame reads "J.M. Hale, Born June 4, 1825 Given him at the age of 5 or 6 yr old.," (toning, foxing), 3 1/8 x 3 1/8 in., in a square embossed brass frame.
