American School, 19th Century

Portrait of Maria Louisa Littlefield. Unsigned, the sitter and artist identified by pencil inscriptions on the reverse and on a piece of paper once affixed to the backboard. Watercolor on paper, 5 1/2 x 3 7/8 in., in a molded giltwood frame. Condition: Toning, light crease c.l., small abrasion u.c.

Note: Inscriptions on the reverse written by different hands read: This little girl was painted by a dear friend Maria Davenport of New Hampshire"; M.L. Littlefield Born March 23, 1---"; "Maria Louisa Littlefield Born Sept. 28, 1833"; "NaNa at the age of 10." Another paper affixed to the backing reads: "Portrait of Maria Louisa Littlefield the paternal grandmother of Maude W. Linscott, who wrote the poem To A. Miniature. The picture was painted by Maria Louisa Davenport a New Hampshire artist and friend of Maria's mother for whom she was named. She was 10 yrs. old at the time of painting which makes it 1843."
