Attributed to John S. Blunt (New England, 1798-1835)

Pair of Portraits, c. 1830. Unsigned. One oil on canvas, depicting a young woman with a fashionable looped hairstyle wearing ornamental gold jewelry on her lace-bordered dress with puffy sleeves against a brown ground; the oil on panel companion male bust portrait depicts a man in a stylized pose sitting in a red upholstered chair also wearing fashionable 1830s dress and against a brown ground, both are in original cove-molded re-gilded wooden frames, (re-varnished, female only has varnish inconsistencies),sight size 27 3/4 x 23 1/4 in.

Note: The female portrait includes a label affixed to the rear of the frame "Tilden-Thurber Art Gallery- Providence."
John S. Blunt was both a professional portraitist and an ornamental painter based in Portsmouth, New Hampshire. His portraits included decorative patterns as can be seen in the lady's sleeves, hair, and jewelry, and usually had a greenish cast to the flesh tones as seen in both portraits.
