Shaker Yellow Painted Wooden Tabletop Yarn Swift, attributed to Thomas Damon (1819-80),Hancock, New Hampshire, 1850-60, the collapsible swift made of maple, birch, and possibly ash, with a yellow wash, turned cup at top of center shaft, wooden thumbscrew, (imperfections),ht. 24 3/4, expands to 30 in. dia.
Note: During his 55 years of Shaker life, Thomas Damon had the opportunity to practice woodworking in Hancock and Tyringham, Massachusetts as well as Enfield, Connecticut. He was in charge of the swift business in Hancock for many years. Swifts such as this lot were made to be mounted to tables.
