William Matthew Prior, (Maine, Maryland, and Massachusetts, 1806-1873)

Portrait of a Boy. 1840s. Unsigned. A portrait of a young boy in green, Boston area. Oil on academy board, the child, who has a direct gaze, is dressed in a green suit accented with a white collar and highlighted buttons and holds a whip in one hand, 14 x 10 in., in a period veneered frame which appears original. Condition: Very good.

Provenance: Direct family descent.

Note: This portrait includes faintly pink cheeks, a flat style, and chubby highlighted fingers and nails, as is characteristic of William Matthew Prior.
