Needlework Sampler, "Elizabeth Marshall Her Work 1813," Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, silk threads on a linen ground with an undulating flowering vine border surrounding a pious verse flanked by flowers in striped baskets, birds, and dogs, lower panel with a house with fence and garden, a strolling couple, and several trees and animals, (toning, fading, stains), 18 x 20 in., mounted in the original wood frame.
Literature: Some design elements in this needlework are similar to others done in the Federal period in Philadelphia, such as the striped baskets, house and garden with figures, and spindly legged sheep. They are illustrated in GIRLHOOD EMBROIDERY: AMERICAN SAMPLERS & PICTORIAL NEEDLEWORK 1650-1850, by Betty Ring, Alfred A. Knopf, New York, 1993 pp. 367-9.
