Description:

Engraved Whale's Tooth and a Boatswain's Pipe, c. 1865, the tooth engraved with two scenes of ships at sea, the whistle engraved with an eagle on one side, a banner with the initials "R.F." and "J.W. Smith" on the reverse, (age cracks and stains on the tooth), lg. 5 7/8, 5 1/2 in.

Note: A tag attached to the whistle has indistinct ink inscriptions reading "Killed by a ---whale Wa--a Smith killed at sea off Jap-------came back with his things about 1865."
