Polychrome and Gilt Painted Tin Civil War Canteen, Massachusetts, c. 1858, flattened spherical vessel, one side painted with a Civil War battle scene depicting several Union soldiers, one carrying an American flag, an officer on horseback, and two injured Union soldiers and two injured Confederate soldiers in the foreground, a hill in the background with more Union soldiers bearing three more flags; the reverse with a gilt banner inscribed "G.A. HANSON/Co. H/51st Reg. MASS Vol.1," above a later inscription "1861-1865/ G.A.R. 1884/ L.M. THOMSON. PT," gilt border and spout, (dents, small scattered paint losses),dia. 8 5/8 in.

Note: This canteen belonged to George A. Hanson, a Corporal in Company H of the 51st regiment, Massachusetts Volunteer (Infantry) Militia. He enlisted at age 20 in Southbridge, Massachusetts, on August 20, 1862, mustered in on September 25, 1862, and was discharged June 12, 1863, for disability in Newbern, North Carolina. He died September 3, 1913, in Minneapolis, Minnesota.
