Description:

Mosby, John Singleton (1833-1916), His Commission, Signed Document, March 26th, 1863, one page, by James Seddon as Secretary of War, appointment of John Singleton Moseby (sic) as Major of Partizan Rangers, (toned, minor edge chips). Note: The celebrated Commander of Mosby's Partisan Rangers receives his promotion to Major in this document of March 26th, 1863. Originally an enlisted man and officer in the first Virginia Cavalry, Mosby quickly rose through ranks due to his exploits with J.E.B. Stuart in the Peninsula Campaign of 1862 and was given the authority to raise a band of partisans for service in the Loudoun Valley in Northern Virginia. His disruptions and bold attacks on the Union forces gave "The Gray Ghost" a singular place in the American imagination as one of the larger than life heroes of the Confederacy.
