Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen (Danish/American, 1850-1921)

Portrait of Coastal Steamer "Horatio Hall". Inscribed, signed and dated lower right Inscribed, signed and dated lower right "A. Jacobsen 1898 West Hoboken, NJ." The two masted ship carries a flag bearing its identity: "Horatio Hall," and another with the letter "P" on an orange ground and an American flag off the stern. A wooden barrel reading "Maine SS. Co." is floating in the water off the bow. Oil on canvas, 23 5/8 x 41 3/8 in., in a reproduction molded gilt frame. Condition: very good.

Note: Artist: Antonio Nicolo Gasparo Jacobsen was born in Denmark and moved to New York City in1871. Within a few years, he began painting portraits of ships. In 1880 he moved to West Hoboken, New Jersey where he established his studio and painted ship portraits for the rest of his life. The coastal steamer "Horatio Hall" was built at Roach's shipyard in Chester, Pennsylvania by the Delaware River Company and owned by Main Steamship Company. Her home port was Portland, Maine when completed in 1898. She sank after a collision east of Monomoy Island.
