Set of Patriotic Picture Blocks by Thomas Nast, c. 1876, with six images of Uncle Sam in various settings, including sitting on the White House portico, fighting Indians and signing the Declaration, one image with printed Nash signature, in box base, 12 x 10 in.; together with a manuscript draft letter by Nast to the New York Evening Post, 1888, on the back of the Post's letter to him.
Provenance: According to the consignor, the puzzle came from Nast's estate. Nast is famous as one of the pioneers of American political cartooning. His most famous works were his depictions of the corrupt "Boss" Tweed of New York's Tammany Hall, and was the first to depict Democrats as donkeys and Republicans as elephants.
