Monumental Brown Glazed Pottery Teapot, Peabody, Massachusetts, late 19th century, the domed lid and ribbed finial with gilt highlights, the body having a blue-gray floral transfer design on both sides and extensive gilt decoration, (rim chip),three gallon capacity, ht. 15 in.
N.B. According to accompanying information, Mr. Paige of The Paige Pottery states that this pot was made for a tea company exhibit, (probably Chase and Sanborn),at the Chicago World's Fair, 1893. When the Fair closed, the pot was returned to the Paige Pottery. In 1932 and the ten years following, it was displayed in the "Old Wheeler Tea House" in Gloucester, Massachusetts.
Moses Paige came from Maine in 1872 seeking employment at the pottery, which was originally owned by Amos Osborn and had had several owners by this time. In 1876, he bought the company which continued successfully into the mid 20th century. The building was destroyed by fire around 1945.
