American School, 19th Century Quaker Meeting Ground, Salem, Massachusetts. Signed and dated indistinctly "Parkhurst" l.r., later inscription "Parkhurst, the Quaker painter of Marblehead" to the stretcher. Oil on canvas, 13 1/2 x 21 1/2 in., in red and black grain-painted frame. Condition: Minor retouch. N.B. Inscriptions to the stretcher further indicate that Parkhurst emigrated from England to settle in Marblehead 1850-60, and note that the artist was chiefly a marine painter.
