Attributed to Ammi Phillips (American, 1788-1865) Portrait of a Gentleman Holding a Letter, c. 1835, Kent, Connecticut, or Amenia (Dutchess County),New York, the letter appears to be inscribed "M. Trumball." Unsigned. Oil on canvas, 31 1/2 x 26 1/2 in., original frame. Condition: Scattered retouch and craquelure. Literature: This portrait is also briefly described, dated, and its probable point of origin mentioned in the publication Revisiting Ammi Phillips: Fifty Years of American Portraiture, by Stacy Hollander, Howard Fertig, and Mary Black, Museum of American Folk Art, 1994, p. 76.! N.B. The published information, similar framing, and oral family history and descent suggest that lot 107 and 107A depict a husband and wife.
