American School, 19th Century

Shepherdess of Salem. Signed and dated "HGE 1840" l.r., titled below, shown flying the house flag of Rogers Brothers of Salem. Mixed media including watercolor and pen and ink on paper, 7 1/2 x 9 1/4 in., in a molded gilt frame. Condition: Scattered stains and foxmarks, overall toning, not examined out of frame.

N.B. The Shepherdess, here rigged as a bark, was built in Medford in 1825 and sailed largely in the India trade to Bombay. The work is accompanied by a letter from the curator at the Peabody Essex Museum detailing further the history of the ship's ownership and voyages.
