Robert Salmon (Scottish/American, 1775-1844)
The Snow Sophia off Greenock. Signed and dated "No. 475 Painted by Robert Salmon Greenock 1826" on the reverse, identified on plaque affixed to frame. Oil on panel, 19 1/2 x 31 in., in a molded gilt gesso frame. Condition: Scattered retouch, split to panel u.r., slight curvature to panel, areas of craquelure.
N.B. The use of the Marryat Code flags to identify the vessel is highly unusual for Salmon. By the use of the code, the vessel to the left can be identified as the Aristomenes, built in New York.
