Cherry and Pine Oxbow Chest of Drawers, Windsor or East Hartford, Connecticut area, attributed to George Belden, William Flagg, or Erastus Grant of the Chapin School, 1790-1810, the reverse serpentine thumb-molded top with end-blocking above a conforming case of cockbeaded graduated drawers flanked by engaged quarter columns on a molded base above ogee feet on platforms, original brass pulls, old refinish, (imperfections),ht. 32 5/8, case wd. 36 1/8, overall wd. 39, case dp. 19 5/8, overall dp. 22 1/4 in. Provenance: Family descent in the M.T. Hazen family of Hartford, Connecticut, since early in the 20th century. Literature: Maine Antique Digest, March, 1993, "The Hartford Case Furniture Survey," by Thomas P. Kugelman, M.D., and Alice Kugelman, A.S.A.; figure 4 pictures the "quadrant base" which is found on lot 94. A subsequent article in Maine Antiques Digest, January, 1994, "The Chapin School of East Windsor, Connecticut," by Alice Kugelman, Thomas Kugelman, and Robert Lionetti, lists construction elements of a Chapin high chest; lot 94 shares many of these same elements.
