William Pierce Stubbs (American, 1842-1909) Portrait of the Half-Brig "Lucy W. Snow." Signed "Stubbs" l.l., vessel identified on pennant, stern, and wheel house. Oil on canvas, 23 1/2 x 35 1/2 in., framed. Condition: Lined, minor flaking, scattered craquelure. N.B. The "Lucy W. Snow" was built in Rockland, Maine, in 1869, and belonged to the firm of Snow, Farwell & Company. Her captain was H. Hall. Ships of this kind were usually used as "coasters," engaged in trade along the coast from New England, New York, and the Carribean along to South America.
