Miniature on Ivory of Julia Clarke Brewster (1796-1826),attributed to John Brewster, Jr. (1766-1854),painted in the Columbia or Hampton, Connecticut area, c. 1820, enclosed in the original oval gilded copper locket case within the original red leather hinged case, ht. 2 1/4, wd. 1 7/8 in. Note: John Brewster, Jr. advertised in newspapers that he did portraits for fifteen dollars and miniatures for five dollars. This example has the cross-hatched background modeling and coloring of the faces, the direct frontal gaze and the nose delineated in three-quarter profile, typical of Brewster's work. Provenance: The sitter, Julia Clarke, married Dr. Sardius Brewster October 1822, who was born in Columbia, Connecticut and was the third cousin of John Brewster, jr. who lived in Hampton, Connecticut. The sitter, her husband, and the artist all lived within a twelve to fifteen mile radius of one another at one time. This miniature has descended in the family to the consignor.
