Painted Yellow Pine Carving of George Washington, possibly South Carolina, c. 1840, the standing figure with relief carved features and clothing painted brown with traces of gilt, mounted on a carved cruciform poplar base, inscribed Pope Norris under right arm, (wear and old losses),ht. 26 1/4, wd. 8 1/2, dp. 8 1/2 in. N.B. Descended through an Edgefield, South Carolina family. This district was the home of many prominent South Carolinians, the inscribed name is composed of two common Edgefield family names.
