Norman Ringdahl's paintings draw inspiration from the natural world around him, but the subjects are often not so much literal places as they are the forms, textures, contrasts, reflective light and abstract designs he discovers in the landscape. Sometimes the results are largely representational; at other times the same theme may be expressed in more abstract compositions. Either way, the brushwork is critically important. Each stroke must serve a purpose in the painting, have its own expressive quality, and be rendered with the greatest economy of means. What he strives for most in his paintings is to create compositions in which representational forms are balanced with the essentially abstract patterns he sees everywhere in nature.
