Portrait of George Washington Sells For $446,000 At Skinner Americana Auction

An unsigned Portrait of George Washington attributed to Rembrandt Peale sold for $446,000 at Skinner's June 6th auction of American furniture and decorative arts in Boston. The attribution of this painting, made by Peale scholar Carol Eaton Soltis, of Radnor, Pennsylvania, is based on this painting’s being a very close and diligent copy of Charles Willson Peale’s 1772 George Washington, currently in the collection of Washington and Lee University, suggesting the artist had direct access to the 1772 work. The painting secured the undivided attention of the bidding audience, and saw steady competition for its ownership from the start, finally selling to a bidder on the floor. The portrait led a highly successful sale that was marked by depth and breadth of material, and solid prices throughout.

Skinner’s next auction to feature American furniture and decorative arts is our annual August Auction, being held Sunday, August 15th in our Bolton, MA gallery. Skinner’s next Boston-based auction of American Furniture and Decorative arts will be held on Friday October 29th and Saturday October 30th, 2004.
