Jade Mountain Sells For $182,000 In Skinner's January 25th Auction of Asian Art

If season openers are an indication of the times to come, this will be a banner year for Skinner. The auction house began its 2004 Winter Auction Season with a weekend of back-to-back sales of European furniture and decorative arts and Asian works of art on January 24th and 25th. Both sales drew interest from across the globe and grossed over $2.7 million. "The chemistry in the gallery was amazing. From start to finish, every category did especially well," said European department director Stuart Slavid.

The Asian sale was particularly healthy. Extraordinary offerings, a strong market, and presence from Peking, Hong Kong, Taiwan, London, and New York resulted in an enormously successful auction. Leading the offerings was a rare and elaborately carved Jade Mountain of the Ch'ien Lung period (1736-1796). A dark green stone with "ancient bronze" markings in brilliant green, and carved with pavilions, granaries, figures, water buffalo, trees, and foliage, the piece attracted significant attention prior to going on the block, and ultimately sold on the floor to a London dealer for $182,000.

Skinner’s next auctions of European & Asian offerings will be held in April. Check the auction schedule on this site for more specific dates and times.
