Skinner Auction of Paintings and Prints Held at Skinner September 7
Boston, MA - September 20, 2001 – Skinner, Inc., a leading full-service auctioneer and appraiser of antiques and fine art, held an auction of American and European Paintings and Prints on September 7, 2001. The auction was held in two sessions, the first featuring prints and photography, and the second offering paintings.
Glow of the City, a drypoint by Martin Lewis, led the first session, garnering $20,700. The Bath by Paul Cadmus sold for $6,325, and two works by Pablo Picasso, Tete de Jeune Fille and Untitled/Man with Plumed Hat from the 347 SERIES, sold for $5,175 and $4,025 respectively. Fertility by Grant Wood sold for $4,312.50, and a group of etchings by Frank Weston Benson included Eagle in the Sky that sold for $4,715, Salmon that sold for $3,335, and Clam Digger that went for $2,415. Photography featured a lot of four stroboscopic images by Harold E. Edgerton that realized $5,175.
Highlights in the second session included a fine group of marine art. Whaler and Schooners Sailing Past Icebergs by William Bradford sold for $40,250, A Summer Sail by Henrietta Dunn Mears for $21,850, and Harbor View with Sailboats by Aldro Thompson Hibbard for $20,700. Also offered were Cove Fishing by Allen Gilbert Cram selling for $19,550, New York Harbor at Moonlight by Edward Moran selling for $18,400, and a 19th century American School Schooners and Catboat Along the Shore at Sunset/Possibly a New York Scene reaching $17,250.
Additional highlights included Father Jogues by Henry F. Farny that sold for $34,500, Still Life with Plums and Cherries by Levi Wells Prentice and Venetian Canal View by Antonio Maria de Reyna that sold for $20,700 each, and Portrait of a Woman in White by Francisco Miralles that realized $19,550. An interesting selection of Southern scenes in the sale featured On Atlantic Street, Charleston/A Vegetable Vender with a Horse Drawn Cart by Elizabeth O’Neill Verner that sold for $17,250, and The Farm Worker’s Cabins by Verner that realized $11,500. Tending the Fire by Edouard Frere went for $18,400, and Teodor Starkowski by Paul Cadmus sold for $14,950.
The Road to Town/A Winter Landscape with a Horse Drawn Sleigh by Clarence Alphonse Gagnon topped the landscapes in the auction garnering $44,850. Said Colleene Fesko, director of Skinner’s department of American and European Paintings, "Both the Frere and the Gagnon came from a private New England collection, and were acquired decades ago. The quality of these two works and their freshness to the market both contributed to their success." Other landscapes included Winter Landscape, Dawn by Walter Launt Palmer, Boating Down the River by Paul Weber, and The Overlook by Benjamin Champney that sold for $17,250 each, and Marin County Pastoral View by Thaddeus Welch that sold for $16,100. The auction also featured selected sculptures, including Mountain Mother by Charles Marion Russell that also sold for $16,100.
