Amati Violin Tops Skinner Auction Of Fine Musical Instruments
Armistead Sculpture Leads Skinner Auction of Asian Works of Art
Boston, MA -Skinner, Inc., a leading full-service auctioneer and appraiser
of antiques and fine art, held an auction of Asian Works of Art in
Boston on June 23, 2001. Highlights included sculpture from the collection
of W.H. Armistead, including a gilt bronze figure of the Buddha, a
figure of the Green Tara Syamatara, from the early Ming period that
garnered an impressive $41,400, and a bronze image from 15th/16th
century Southern India of Shiva nataraja (the Lord of the dance) that
sold for $19,550. Additional bronzes included a Greek Archaic period
bull from the fifth century B.C. ($6,900), a pair of first century
A.D. Greco-Roman bulls ($6,037.50), and a Southwest Iranian horse
trapping from the first millennium B.C. ($4,715). Also offered was
an Egyptian bull, c. 1000 B.C. ( $4,600), a Syrian bull from the first
millennium B.C. ($3,335) and a pair of Roman bulls from the first
century A.D. ($3,220). A large second century A.D. carved sandstone
bust of a woman from Palmyra garnered $7,187.
Other highlights covered a broad spectrum of offerings. Meiji period pieces included a Japanese Satsuma ware covered jar signed Hozan ($12,075), a Satsuma vase ($6,900), and a Satsuma vase signed Unzan(?) ($2,645). A Hirado ware porcelain jar ($1,840), and a 19th century Imari charger ($1,150) also were featured. Furniture included a pair of bookcases
from the Ch’ien Lung period ($3,220), and a pair of 18th century Chinese tribute tables ($2,070). An 18th century Chinese altar table ($1,955), a set of four 19th century Chinese elmwood armchairs ($1,265), and a 19th century Indo-Burmese circular rosewood table ($1,035) rounded out the highlights in this portion of the sale. Leading military items included a Japanese short sword ($4,887.50), a 19th century Japanese cannon ($4,025), a Japanese sword ($3,105), a 19th century Japanese suit of armor ($2,990), and a 6th century A.D. Japanese gilt bronze sword pommel ($2,185). A jeweled sword from early 20th century Tibet or Northern China fetched $3,737.50.

highlights included an 18th/early 19th century
Blanc de Chine figure, that sold for $7,187.50. Also of note were
a 17th century miniature painting from Mughal, India depicting
the Presentation of Christ in the Temple ($4,312.50), a 19th
century Japanese ivory fan ($4,025), and a pair of 18th/early
19th century Export porcelain figures of two women holding
blue and white vases ($2,990). Other offerings included a second century
B.C. bronze lamp from Asia Minor ($9,487.50), a mid-19th
century Chinese carved jade snuff bottle ($5,750), two 19th
century compartment inro ($4,370 together), and a boxwood netsuke
and an ivory netsuke ($1,495 and $1,092.50 respectively). An early
20th century fountain pen of European manufacture, the
case lacquered in black with gold and polychrome makie-e by a Japanese
craftsman, sold for $1,380.
