Jewelry Sparkles at Skinner
Boston, MA - An oval brilliant-cut diamond solitaire weighing 10.43 cts. led
Skinner’s auction of fine jewelry on March 13. Competition for the piece was
persistent, and ultimately came down to two bidders, with a floor bidder finally
outbidding a telephone bidder at $167,500. Proceeds from the sale of this lot
will benefit a New England educational institution. The auction also offered
a fine Edwardian sapphire and diamond ring set with a cushion-cut sapphire weighing
5.18 cts. that drew international attention. It sold for $66,300.
Additional highlights in diamond jewelry included a solitaire set with an old
European-cut diamond weighing 9.85 cts. that sold for $29,900, a solitaire set
with a round brilliant-cut diamond weighing 3.18 cts. that realized $12,650,
and an 18kt white gold and diamond bracelet that reached $11,500. A pair of
18kt gold and diamond clips signed Van Cleef & Arpels sold for $10,925, and
a diamond twin-stone ring set with two old European-cut diamonds for $8,050.
Highlights in Art Deco diamond jewelry included a platinum and diamond lavaliere
that garnered $12,650, three platinum and diamond line bracelets that sold for
$8,625, $5,290, and $5,175 respectively, and a platinum and diamond bracelet
that went for $6,037.50.
The auction featured a large selection of wristwatches, which were led by a
Cartier Art Deco platinum and diamond backwinder wristwatch that reached $9,200.
Also by Cartier, an Art Deco 18kt yellow gold backwinder wristwatch sold for
$6,325, a Patek Philippe gentleman’s 18kt gold wristwatch for $5,290, a Movado
gentleman’s 14kt gold "Jump Hours" wristwatch, for $4,140, and a Gubelin Retro
14kt gold lady’s wristwatch, for $3,450.
Other sale highlights included a 15½-inch South Sea pearl necklace that drew
$13,800, a ruby and diamond band centered by a cushion-shape ruby that brought
$8,050, and an oxidized 18kt gold starfish brooch signed Buccellati that sold
for $4,370. A collection of enameled boxes from the Charles Thomae archives
in North Attleborough, Massachusetts, was very well received. Featuring an assortment
of cigarette cases and other boxes, the selection included a sterling silver
and enamel cigarette case depicting symbols for storm warnings and weather forecasts
that sold for $862.50, and a sterling silver and enamel cigarette case depicting
three geese in flight over a marsh that realized $805.00. Rounding out the sale
was a group of contemporary offerings including a one-owner collection of artist
designed jewelry. Examples from this group included a pair of silver and aluminum
rings by Amalia del Ponte that sold for $1,725, an 18kt gold cuff bracelet entitled
"Day Moon" by Guitou Knoop that sold for $1,150, and a brass pendant designed
as a puzzle signed M. Berrocal that brought $345.
