William Bradford Paintings Sail at Skinner Auction

Boston, MA - Two arctic scenes by William Bradford, Arctic Sunset with Rainbow and Arctic Whaler Homeward Bound Among the Icebergs led Skinner’s auction of American and European paintings and prints on March 9, selling for $178,500 and $90,500 respectively. Both paintings sold above expectations, as did many other offerings.

A varied selection of prints opened the auction, highlighted by Arthur Wesley Dow’s In Ipswich Marshes, which sold for $9,200. Three prints by Martin Lewis, Down to the Sea at Night, Oncoming Rain, and Chance Meeting, sold for $3,105, 1,955, $4,370 respectively, and a Portrait of Maya after Pablo Picasso went for $3,737.50. Additional works included Pacific Steamer by Friedensreich Hundertwasser ($2,875), Ronde de Nuit by Felix Hilaire Buhot ($2,185), Manhattan I, Stone 2 by Lyonel Feininger ($2,070), and Marche aux Legumes, a Pontoise by Camille Pissarro ($1,840). Selected etchings by Rembrandt Harmensz van Rijn included Rembrandt in a Velvet Cap and Plume and Christ Driving the Money-Changers From the Temple ($1,840 each), The Good Samaritan ($1,610), and Jan Uytenbogaert, Armenian Preacher ($2,300). Sporting prints featured Flight Woodcock by Aiden Lassell Ripley ($1,610), and Geese Alighting and Pintails Passing by Frank Weston Benson ($1,035 each). The first session closed with a selection of photography, that was led by several portraits by Lotte Jacobi: Portrait of Albert Einstein ($1,265), Portrait of Franz Kafka ($1,265), Portrait of Lotte Lenya ($1,035), and Head of a Dancer from PORTFOLIO II ($1,495).

The evening session saw interest in a broad variety of offerings. In addition to the two Bradfords, marine and harbor views included Fishing Port, Cameret France by Edgar Alwin Payne ($41,400), Boston Harbor at Dawn by Hendricks A. Hallett ($25,300), Harbor View by Cesar Klein ($17,250), and Harbor View by Robert Henri ($10,925). Highlights also included Jefferson David Chalfant’s In Hard Luck ($60,800), and Aiden Lassell Ripley’s Grouse Cover ($48,300). Two works by Laura Coombs Hills, Jonquils and Narcissus and Heavenly Blues/A Still Life with Morning Glories ($46,000 each), led the selection of still lifes; others included Emma Fordyce MacRae’s Asian Style Still Life with Lilies ($18,400) and Walt Kuhn’s Roses ($18,400).

Also selling well beyond their estimates were Portrait of a Woman with a Goldfish by Ernest Lee Major ($37,950), Buck Mountain, Lake George by David Johnson ($25,300), The Boat Ride by Marguerite Rousseau ($21,850), Salome with the Head of John the Baptist by Johann Heinrich Fuseli ($20,700), and Fire Scene by Moonlight/A Boston View attributed to Robert Salmon ($19,550). Crest of the Wave, a bronze by Harriet Whitney Frishmuth sold for $40,250, and three works by Louis Comfort Tiffany also sold high: The Temple Ruins at Luxor, Egypt ($18,400), The Egyptian Ruins ($17,250), and Picnic in the Forest ($13,800).
