Featuring a Rare 12th century Korean Celadon Vase
BOSTON, Mass. - April 10, 2006
-
www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, one of the nation's leading auction houses, will host an auction of Asian Furniture and Decorative Arts on Saturday, April 29th in Boston, at 10 a.m.
Highlight
Important offerings in the auction include a rare 12th century Korean celadon vase (lot 277, $8/12,000), of particular interest for its unusually large size (ht. 14 inches). According to department director James Callahan, "These pieces were only found in royal and noble households, and have rarely survived, as they were buried with their owners and not passed down in collections." Also featured is an 18th century pair of blue and white bowls bearing the Ch'ia Ch'ing six-character seal mark (1796-1820) and of the period (lot 243, $1,5/2,500). (A similar, but slightly earlier example is discussed in Chinesches Porzellan Die Olmer'sche Samlung in Roemer Museum; Hildesheim, illus. #63, 64, p. 122). Additional highlights include an 18th century celadon plate, bearing the Ch'ien Lung six-character mark (1735-1796) and of the period (lot 196, $150/250). Old collections of netsukes, snuff bottles, jades, and Goan ivories also will highlight this sale of over 700 lots, as well as objects deaccessioned from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston. Furniture, weapons, cloisonne objects, lacquered and cinnabar offerings round out the selections.
