FINE ORIENTAL RUGS AND CARPETS
TO BE OFFERED AT SKINNER MAY 14TH
BOSTON, Mass. - May 2, 2005 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, one of the nation's leading auction houses, will host an auction of Oriental Rugs and Carpets in Boston on May 14, 2005. The sale, which will begin at 12 noon, features a fine group of room size carpets and many desirable Caucasian weavings among its highlights.
Room Size Carpets
Skinner's auctions of Oriental rugs consistently offer an extensive selection of carpets. Highlights in the May 14th sale include a Northwest Persian Bahkshaish carpet from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 137, $20/25,000), a late 19th century West Persian Fereghan-Sarouk (lot 135, $12/15,000), and a West Central Persian Motasham Kashan example from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 133, $25/30,000). Also from the last quarter of the 19th century are two Northwest Persian Serapis (lots 112 and 90, $10/12,000 each), and a Northwest Persian Tabriz (lot 114, $10/12,000), and from the third quarter of the 19th century, a Northwest Persian Bahkshaish (lot 91, $20/25,000). A late 19th century West Anatolian Ushak (lot 93, $10/12,000) and an early to mid-19th century West Turkestani Chodor main carpet (lot 111, $8/10,000) also will be featured.
Caucasian Weavings
A Marasali prayer rug from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 94, $7/9,000) an Eagle Karabagh from the second half of the 19th century (lot 120, $12/15,000), and a Bordjalou Kazak from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 97, $8/10,000) lead the selection of Caucasian weavings in the auction. Additional examples include a Kazak long rug from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 72, $6/8,000), a Gendje rug, from the second half of the 19th century (lot 116, $6/8,000), a 19th century Kaitag embroidery (lot 121, $7/9,000), and a Konaghend rug from the second half of the 19th century (lot 115, $6/8,000). A Talish long rug (lot 68, $5/7,000), a Kuba rug (lot 99, $7/9,000), a Kazak rug (lot 119, $6/8,000), and a Shirvan prayer rug (lot 69, $3/5,000), all from the last quarter of the 19th century, are bound to attract attention, as well.
Additional Highlights
Also featured in the auction are a late 19th century West Persian Fereghan-Sarouk (lot 103, $8/10,000), a late 19th century West Central Persian Motasham Kashan (lot 101, $10/12,000), and a Northwest Persian Tabriz from the last quarter of the 19th century (lot 73, $5/7,000). An East Anatolian Sarkisla (lot 79, $6/8,000), and a West Turkestan Tekke Kizil Chuval (lot 105, $2/2,500), both from the second half of the 19th century, round out the highlights.
