FINE ORIENTAL RUGS AND CARPETS TO BE
OFFERED AT SKINNER MAY 8TH
BOSTON, Mass. -April 23, 2004 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, one of the nation's leading auction houses, will host an auction of Oriental Rugs and Carpets in Boston on May 8, 2004. The sale, which will begin at 12 noon, will offer more than 45 room size carpets, and several early 19th century rugs, as well as over 25 Turkoman items, and a number of Soumak carpets.
Room Size Carpets
One of the strongest features of this auction is the selection of room size carpets. Northwest Persian examples from the last quarter of the 19th century will include two Serapis (lot 124 and 105, $12/15,000 and $10/15,000 respectively), an early 20th century Bidjar (lot 125, $12/15,000), and an Agra carpet from India formerly in the collection of a New England college art museum (lot 106, $5/7,000). Late 19th century offerings also include a Chajli long rug (lot 49, $5/7,000), a West Persian Sultanabad (lot 156, $3/5,000), and three West Anatolian Ushak carpets (lots 48, 107, and 183, $1/1,500 each).
Early Weavings
The sale features a particularly interesting selection of early weavings, including two West Anatolian Ghiordes prayer rugs, one an 18th century example (lot 128, $3,5/4,500), and the second, an early to mid-19th century weaving (lot 131, $2,5/3,500). Other offerings include an early 19th century Northwest Persian Kurd carpet (lot 209, $7/900), and an early to mid-19th century Kurd rug (lot 129, $3,5/4,500), a 19th century Algerian Ottoman embroidery (lot 130, $5/7,000), a mid-19th century Baluch rug (lot 35, $2,5/3,500), and a mid-19th century Yomud Chuval from West Turkestan (lot 121, $1,2/1,500).
Additional Highlights
Those in search of the Soumak weave will find a variety of selections, ranging from a Dragon Soumak rug (lot 69, $10/12,000), to a Northeast Caucasus carpet (lot 70, $4/6,000), to a Shahsavan Soumak and pile bag from Northwest Persia (lot 133, $1,2/1,500), to a rug from the Northeast Caucasus (lot 132, $7/900). Also highlighting the sale are a Moghan rug (lot 110, $8/10,000), Kazaks (lots 111, 25, and 108; $7/9,000, $4/6,000, and $2,5/3,500 respectively), and Kubas (lots 142, 112, and 2; $6/8,000, $5/7,000, and $2,5/3,000 respectively), as well as a Talish long rug (lot 109, $5/7,000), a Karabagh (lot 90, $5/7,000), a Fereghan Sarouk (lot 63, $5/7,000), and a Malayer (lot 82, $3/5,000). Other late 19th century examples include an Ersari Torba (lot 120, $3/3,500), a Beshir prayer rug (lot 95, $2/3,000), and a Tekke Chuval (lot 119, $1,2/1,500).
Additional features include an Afshar rug from South Persia (lot 32, $5/7,000), a Shirvan long rug (lot 28, $3/3,500), a South Caucasian long rug (lot 3, $1,5/2,000), and a Northwest Persian Serapi rug (lot 59, $2/3,000). Shahsavan Kelim saddlebags from Northwest Persia (lot 64, $2,5/3,500), a West Persian saddle cover (lot 136, $1/1,200), an Afshar (lot 43, $8/1,200), an Anatolian Kelim (lot 54, $2/2,500), and a 19th century Central Asian Ikat panel (lot 151, $1,2/1,500) round out the selection.
