BOSTON, Mass. – April 29, 2003 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading auction houses for antiques and fine art, announced today that it will hold an auction of 20th Century Furniture & Decorative Arts on Saturday, May 10 at 11:00 a.m. in its Boston gallery. The sale features a broad array of interesting 20th century material including furniture, lamps, art glass, art pottery, sculpture, and other decorative arts. The sale is rounded-out with the inclusion of textiles, artwork, rugs, and books -- everything to create the look for the decade of your choice.

Styles represented include Arts & Crafts, Art Deco, Art Nouveau, Industrial Era, Mid Century Modern and Contemporary work. Makers include Tiffany, Gustav Stickley, Grueby, Rookwood, Newcomb, Quezal, Durand, Handel, Bradley and Hubbard, Pittsburg, Jensen, Stone, Hoffman, Marblehead, Batchelder, Roseville, as well as studio artist designed pieces.

Art Glass & Tiffany Offerings
For glass aficionados, Skinner offers a nice selection of American Iridescent Art Glass by such makers as, Tiffany, Quezal, and Durand. The sale also offers a warm and colorful selection of lamps by Tiffany, Handel, Bradley and Hubbard, and Pittsburg. Fine examples of these include Lot 330, Tiffany Favrile glass and bronze counter balance table lamp, early 20th century, estimated $2,500-$3,500, and Lot 342, a Tiffany Studios Three-Light Lily lamp, early 20th century, estimated $6,500-$7,500. Also for Tiffany lovers, the sale features a lovely Tiffany Favrile Glass and Bronze Planter (Lot 335) from a prominent Boston area family. The planter was a gift to the family from the Harwick and Stone family, of Hayden & Stone Stockbrokers of Boston Massachusetts. The planter is estimated $6,000-$8,000.

Georg Jensen Silver
Also auctioned will be a large selection of Arts and Crafts copper metalwork and silver including Jensen, Tiffany, Stone, Hoffman. Representative lots include Lot 206, a Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Pitcher designed by Henning Koppel in 1952, estimated $12,000-$15,000; and Lot 207, a Georg Jensen Sterling Silver Compote, designed by Johan Rhode, estimated $6,500-$8,500.

Art Pottery
The sale also includes a wide array of Arts and Crafts art pottery including Marblehead, Grueby, Newcomb, Batchelder, and Rookwood. A fine example is lot 51, a Marblehead Pottery two-color vase of dark and mottled olive green, estimated $2,000-$3,000. Also being offered is a large amount of Ernest Batchelder tiles. Mr. Batchelder was known for his distinctive handmade relief decorated tiles from Los Angeles California. Tile motifs include cats, birds and leaf, harpsichords, and griffins. Lots 95-98, the tiles are estimated $1,000-$1,500 per lot.

Art Deco
Skinner’s 20th century sales typically feature a wide array of art deco styles and this sale is no exception. Art Deco is represented nicely by a collection of Belgium Art Deco Pottery, several designed by Charles Catteau. Featured lots include Lot 271, a Boch Freres Ceramic Rosette Vase, estimated $1,200-$1,500; Lot 272, a Boch Freres Art Deco Ceramic Vase, estimated $500-$700; Lot 273, a Boch Freres Ceramic Floral Vase, estimated $2,400-$2,800; and Lot 274, a Boch Freres Ceramic Bird Vase, estimated $2,400-$2,800.

Arts & Crafts Furniture
This sale also includes a collection of Arts and Crafts Material from an Upstate New York Collector. Featured furniture lots from this classic collection include: Lot 34, six Arts & Crafts chairs and a Tilt-top dining Table, early 20th century, estimated $6,000-$8,000; and Lot 19, a Gustav Stickley Arts & Crafts oak china closet, designed by Harvey Ellis, estimated $7,000-$9,000.

Modern Movement
Skinner continues its tradition of offering interesting and eclectic modern furniture at auction. This sale features a fun collection of mid-century modern pieces from a Boston area family. Fine examples include Lot 592, a mid-century modern sofa, designed by Florence Knoll, estimated $700-$900; Lot 596, a mid-century modern hanging light of polished stainless steel, estimated $500-$700; Lot 597, a mid-century modern oval dining table, designed by Eero Saarinen, 1956, estimated $800-$1,200; and Lot 598 eight mid-century tulip chairs, designed by Eero Saarinen, estimated $800-$1,200.

Other Interesting Offerings
Other interesting offerings include Lot 89, a rare Hampshire Pottery clock in green glaze, estimated $1,200-$1,800, Lot 290, an Art Deco Rosewood Sideboard, France, c. 1930 estimated $2,500-$3,500, and a collection of Austrian art pottery, Lots 154-162, ranging in estimate from $500-$1,200.
