BOSTON, Mass. - January 2, 2003 – www.skinnerinc.com - Skinner, one of the nation's leading auction houses, kicks off it's winter 2003 auction season with a two-day auction featuring European Furniture & Decorative Arts and Asian Arts on Saturday and Sunday, January 25th and 26th in its Boston gallery at 63 Park Plaza in Boston. The Saturday session will begin at 10:00 a.m. and features 18th and 19th century English and continental furniture, 19th century American furniture, fine ceramics including Wedgwood, silver, clocks, other decorative arts, and 20 lots of Oriental carpets and rugs. The Sunday session will begin at 11:00 a.m. and will feature Asian arts including a fine collection of 17th and 18th century Inro, a single owner collection of Netsuke, Japanese tea ceremony ware, plus Asian art, pottery, textiles, sculpture, works on paper, bronzes, and other decorative arts.

· A group of English military paintings and prints, including Lot 421 ($250-350) and Lot 422 ($300-400), both watercolor and gouache studies of officers in uniform by Richard Simkin (English, 1840-1926)
Decorative Arts
Small decorative art items include the usual wide selection of glassware, European porcelain, textiles and clocks. Interesting groupings on offer are a small group of Berlin painted porcelain plaques, including Lot 914, a large Framed Berlin Painted Porcelain Plaque after Raphael's "Madonna of the Chair, ($5000-7000) and a small group of weapons, including Lot 741, and English Blunderbus with Bayonet by H. Nock, London, bearing ferocious engraved warning at muzzle "Feare My Death Knell" ($1500-2500.) Other highlights include:
· Lot 950, a pair of Georgian-style Mahogany and Inlay Cutlery Urns ($2000-4000)
· Lot 920, Hardstone, Gold, Diamond-set, Enameled, and Jeweled Snuff Bottle, retailed by Marcus & Co. Jewelers, NY ($6000-8000) · Lot 892, Cartier Hardstone, Sapphire Mounted, Gold and Enamel Travel Timepiece, in fitted Cartier red morocco case ($6000-8000)
· Lot 862, Egyptian Revival Bronze and Marble Figure of Cleopatra by Aristide C. L. Rousaud (French, fl. 20th century), ht. 26 in. ($4000-6000)
· Lot 848, an interesting English Arts and Crafts Bronze Figure of a Valkyrie by the Omar Ramsden (1873-1939) and Alwyn Carr (1872-1940), two of Britain's most renowned Arts & Crafts metalworkers, who were in partnership from 1898-1918. The forceful figure bearing a spear seems to have been mounted as an extravagant automobile hood ornament. ($250-350)
European & American Furniture
Classic Georgian furniture is highlighted by:
· Lot 566, a George III Crossbanded Satinwood Pembroke Table, c. 1790 ($4000-6000.)
· Lot 559, an Irish Georgian Mahogany Chest of Drawers, 18th century, ($1500-2000.)
· Lot 381, a late George III Satinwood and Mahogany Linen Press, c. 1800 ($4000-6000.)
American Revivalist styles are represented by:
· Lot 686, a large and impressive Carved Walnut Library Table, ($1500-2000.)
· Lot 388, a Baroque Revival Carved Rosewood Bookcase Cabinet ($2000-3000.)
· Lot 356, an American Renaissance Revival Marquetry and Parquetry Inlaid Rosewood Center Table, c. 1870 ($2000-3000.)
Other furniture offerings include:
· A group of marquetry inlaid pieces, including Lot 762, an Italian Neoclassical
Fruitwood Marquetry Inlaid Three Drawer Chest, ($6000-8000), and Lot 297: Dutch
Fruitwood Marquetry Inlaid Slant-lid Desk, 18th century, with sinuous bombé
profile to front ($7000-9000.)
· Lot 373, an unusual Reformed Gothic Walnut and Parcel-gilt Tall Chair, in the manner of William Pugin, with gondola seat, the frieze carved with trefoil, on raised fluted and fluted legs ($800-1200.)
Ceramics
Ceramics offered include fine 18th century English pottery from the estate of Mr. & Mrs. Stanley Katz of Chicago, IL. The Katz collection features delftware including an Adam and Eve and a tulip decorated blue dash charger, as well as a wide assortment of over 50 Staffordshire Whieldon-type creamwares with many fine examples of tortoiseshell and agate wares. English porcelain is well represented with early figures from the Nancy Valpy estate. Nancy was a historian, researcher, and longstanding member of the English Ceramic Circle. A wide selection of over 100 lots of Wedgwood wares includes the Ewanich Collection of New York and stock of the estate of Howard M. Lewis of Wilmington, Delaware, a dealer, collector and lecturer of Wedgwood. Also included in the sale is a diverse collection of Pratt transfer pot lids.
Asian Arts
The sale features over 650 lots of Asian arts, with many pieces coming from
important collections. Some of the more interesting selections include:
· Over 25 pieces of Inro, which in Japanese means "sealed box". The Inro were from a single owner collection, and many come in their original gold lacquered boxes.
· A single owner collection of over 100 Netsuke.
· Over 200 pieces of Japanese tea ceremony ware from a single owner collection from Connecticut. The collection was assembled prior to World War II, with a significant amount of the material purchased from Yamaka in New York and Boston.
· Japanese Jeweled Jade hilted Dagger from the 18th century
· Imperial Nine Dragon 12 Symbol Robe

Previews for the sale will be 12 noon to 5 p.m., Thursday, January 23rd, and 12 noon to 8 p.m., Friday, January 24th, and Sunday, January 26th, 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. There is no preview the morning of the Saturday sale.
