SKINNER’S ASIAN WORKS OF ART AUCTION TO FEATURE VERY RARE MING PERIOD PAINTING AND STONE RUBBINGS
Other offerings include over 100 Antique Netsuke, Korean Ceramics, and Selections from the Robert Hatfield Elsworth Collection
BOSTON, Mass. – June 18, 2002 -- www.skinnerinc.com -- Skinner, Inc., one of the nation’s leading full-service auctioneers and appraisers of antiques and fine art, will hold an auction of Asian Works of Art (Sale #2149) on June 29, 2002 at 11:00 in its Boston, Mass. gallery. The sale features over 800 lots of some truly exceptional material including furniture and decorative arts from Asia & the South Seas, including Chinese and Korean, pottery, netsuke, porcelain, lacquer ware, paintings, woodblock prints, textiles, swords, and jade.
Highlights of the sale include:
· Cover Lot (Lot 527): A parcel-gilt silver wine ewer from 18th century China, most likely the K’ang His period (1662-1722). The ewer features a lobed form, body is hammered from a sheet of silver, with repouss˘e and applied decoration, each panel with designs of landscapes with scholars, pavilions, flowering trees, Taoist longevity symbols, and various Buddhist iconography. A similar example is in the Victoria and Albert Museum in London.
· Lots 272 – 279: a large Ming period painting and very rare complete set of stone rubbings from Wu Liang Ssu, done in the late Ch˘ien Lung or Ch˘ia Ching rein. The tomb these stone rubbings came from was mostly destroyed by the late 19th century. The rubbings feature a famous scene depicting the first Chinese Emperor around 200 B.C. The rubbings were collected in Peking in 1920 by Alan Priest, noted Asian art historian, who later went on to become the first curator of Asian art for the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
· Lots 280-354: 19th and 20th century paintings from the Robert Hatfield Elsworth collection. These paintings are the remainder of the Elsworth collection that is exhibited in the Freer Gallery in Washington, D.C. Elsworth, a noted Asian art expert, was the first person to recognize the artistic merit of paintings from this period of time.
· Beginning at Lot 408: Over 100 antique Netsuke from a single owner collection.
· A wide selection of fine Korean ceramics from three different collectors, including a 12th century celadon incense burner purchased from Mathias Komor, a noted New York dealer in Asian Art.
· A collection of Korean Ceramics, from a Boston-based collector, including a very rare 18th century blue and white porcelain jar, with the rare inscription “Ministry of the Right”, and two equally rare underglazed blue and red Korean porcelains.

Previews for the sale will be held Thursday, June 27th, 12-5 p.m., Friday, June 28th, 12-7 p.m., and Saturday, June 29th, 8-10 a.m. The Friday night preview will also feature a gallery walk, conducted by Skinner’s Director of Asian Art, James Callahan.
